acadia national park photographer artist in residence

During 2011 I have the great honor of serving as Artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park in Maine-my sixth residency for the National Park Service and my first spent in the Eastern US. For one month beginning October 13, 2011 I will photograph extensively throughout two sections of the park;  Mt. Desert Island, the largest and most well-known section of the park and the Schoodic Peninsula, which lies 90 minutes east and is the only section of the park located on the mainland.

My work at Acadia will be to visually capture the "essence" of the park using digital color images and videos as well as black and white photographs captured with turn of the century cameras to convey to viewers a "sense of place" -- the sights, sounds and feelings that one could experience by visiting this area. During my residency, I'll be posting images as well as writing a daily journal about my experiences on my photography blog The Great American Landscape. And, like other prior residencies I'll also spend time at the park talking with visitors about photography and conducting public lectures on photography in our National Parks.

In each artist-in-residence position I've served in for the National Park Service, I've always been asked many times what I hope to accomplish. And even here during my first 24-hours at Acadia I was asked nearly that same question by three different people in the park. I never mind being asked or answering the question [...]
  • Acadia National Park – A New 4-Week Photo Journey Begins October 15, 2011
In talks I give throughout the National Parks, I'm often asked about the details of what it takes to plan and carry out a 2- to 6-week residency or photo shoot. For those who enjoy details, this journey began with 5 weeks of planning, reading 53 books and newsletters, and exchanging emails with dozens of [...]
